ABSTRACT:
Varieties over general valuation domains first appeared as geometric models of valued function fields. While the theory in the case of discrete valuation rings is well-developed, essentially because these rings are noetherian, the general case mainly is unexplored territory and a source of interesting problems. In the talk some glimpses into this territory are provided and some open problems and questions are discussed.
